What is The Open Table NZ?
The Open Table NZ is a network and gathering space for open, inclusive, and progressive Christians in Aotearoa New Zealand. We exist to help people connect, share conversation, and find community shaped by openness, humility, and care.
We’re not a church or denomination—we’re a place to gather, both online and in person.
Do you have a statement of belief?
We don’t have a formal statement of belief. Instead, we are guided by shared values like humility, curiosity, and inclusion. We believe that belonging comes before agreement, and that faith is often found in the space between our different perspectives.
Is The Open Table NZ LGBTQ+ friendly?
Absolutely. We are fully inclusive and affirming of LGBTQ+ people. We believe that everyone belongs at the table, and we celebrate the diversity of identities and relationships within our community.
Who is it for?
- • Those who feel at home in progressive or inclusive theology
- • People holding questions or rethinking faith
- • Anyone seeking community rather than certainty
About gatherings
What kind of gatherings do you host?
We aim to host gatherings that prioritise connection and reflection. They are spaces to listen, learn, and engage with others without the pressure to perform or conform.
Will there be 'worship' or 'services'?
Our gatherings are not traditional church services. They are shaped primarily around conversation, shared reflection, and connection. While some events may include optional contemplative or spiritual practices, the focus is on being together rather than a formal liturgy.
Do I need to agree with everyone?
Not at all. Difference is expected. What matters is a shared commitment to listening and treating one another with dignity.
Practical questions
Is The Open Table NZ political or activist?
While we value justice and dignity for all people, we are not a political or activist organisation. Our purpose is to provide a space for connection and conversation for those whose faith leads them toward progressive and inclusive values.
